I found out something new about Garden of The Gods in Colorado Springs, it is completely free for everyone, forever. After visiting 21 years ago, this new revelation (at least to my wife and I) makes it all the more enjoyable. Donated to the city of Colorado Springs in 1902 by the children of Charles Elliott Perkins, the park is actually a city park and by Perkins wishes this unique geological wonder will always remain free to the public.

The garden and its one of a kind sedimentary white and red rock formations made of limestone and sandstone were deposited horizontally and now are positioned vertically because of the immense forces of the Rocky Mountains and specifically Pike’s Peak forming directly behind what is now the Garden of The Gods. The vertical limestone and sandstone deposits travel for many miles in front of the range of the Rockies around Pike’s Peak, but this particular area is striking in its unique formations.

The park covers some 3,300 acres and is an incredibly popular attraction for both tourists and residents of Colorado Springs and the surrounding areas. It features abundant recreational opportunities including hiking, biking, walking, gawking and even rock climbing for the more adventurous. In fact, there were several climbers scaling the various sheer rock walls all over the park when we visited this past Saturday.

Garden of The Gods is also a very popular spot for photographers, both professional and amateur and you hardly see anyone in the park without a camera. There are so many incredible rock formations within the park you could literally spend years photographing the different moods caused by lighting, weather, seasons, storms and the multitude of angles of all the different faces of rocks, trees, grasses and other geology. You almost could never run out of subject matter to photograph in the park. So, rather than bore you with more words, I’ll let a few pictures speak for themselves. Don’t come to Colorado Springs and not see Garden of the Gods because you will miss a truly breathtaking natural wonder. Enjoy…
