My wife and I love to go on vacation, No kidding, who doesn’t? While people take all kinds of vacations and go to nearly every spot on the globe, there are really only 4 kinds of travelers. Now, there may be sub categories of these 4 basic travel groups and some may even be on the borderline of one or more groups, but you probably fit into one of these groups more than any other. Here they are:

The Busy, I want to Do Everything Traveler – These kind of travelers pack more into their vacation schedules, (and their suitcases) than they do into their regular lives. They probably work 60 hour weeks while on the job and then to get away from it all, they plan vacation weeks filled with 100 hours of activities and tours. They are so busy on their vacation they may need hospitalization afterwords. More is spent on excursions, side trips and guided tours every day by these travelers than they spend on their nightly accommodations. Every year they meticulously plan and execute yet another once-in-a-lifetime trip.

This kind of vacation traveler also obviously spends enormous amounts of money on their vacations and they also keep luggage manufacturers in business. Some people like to do the minimalist thing when packing for a vacation, but the busy traveler would ask for a dictionary if you used the word minimalist in a game of Scrabble. Airport and hotel bellhops love to see these travelers pull up to the curb because they know their kids will have a grand Christmas from the tips earned by carrying the carts full of luggage needed to make a vacation for these travelers complete.

The Relaxed Traveler – When these people go on vacation their main goal is to spend time relaxing by the pool and then go back to their vacation rental and take a nap. They spend a lot of money at restaurants because after sitting by the pool and napping all day, they don’t want to be bothered by the hassle of making their own dinner even though they rented a condo with a full kitchen. Taking a walk on a sandy beach is the biggest form of exercise they want on their vacations, except for maybe making the 30 yard trek to the pool in the late morning.

They may also enjoy a leisurely bike ride down to the local bookstore, coffee shop or bistro where they can enjoy a nice latte or hot tea and a scone and of course find a comfy chair or a couch to relax in. These travelers are not at all opposed to extra curricular side trips and activities, as long as they can sit down most of the time. Boat rides and horse drawn carriages fit this traveler like a glove. This is the category my wife and I fit into.

The Party Traveler – These vacationers spend the most money, stay in the highest priced accommodations and consume the most alcohol of all vacationers. They love to splurge on everything. If you’ve ever walked into a hotel clothing store and wondered who in the world spends $125 on a hotel logo Polo shirt, this is the customer. By the way, that was one of them standing behind you with a tropical looking drink in their hand on your last vacation, remember now?

Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe ski resorts, New York City and any bar with a cover charge are destinations for the party traveler. The newest, hippest and most expensive restaurants are frequent stops on this vacationer’s itinerary. They are also know to frequent casinos where they can lose more in a single night of gambling than they spend on their entire vacation. But, who cares, it’s a party!

The Cheap Traveler – This kind of traveler probably suffers (if you can call it that) from the most severe cases of wanderlust, but has less money to travel on than the party vacationer spends on an an expensive dinner in New York City. However, the lack of money never seems to stop the cheap traveler and traveling Europe on $20 a day is wild extravagance to them.

This is not the traveler you meet when staying at a hostel for $15 a night. This is the worker at the hostel. They work there so they can stay for free and explore at night and on the weekends. They are also known for the most minimalist packing possible and have been know to stay 2 months vagabonding around the United States with nothing more than a small hip pouch, a pair of 30 year old sandals and a micro fiber towel. That’s not counting the pair of shorts and tye dyed shirt they’re wearing.

So, which one of these traveler groups do you fit into? Leave your comments below and let us know.
